Evaluation :)

I feel that after our hard work, problems and mistakes that our thriller came together pretty well. During the making of our thriller we have learnt many new skills such as using new software called imovie to make a high quality video. Our group has had some problems but we overcome them and overall produced a good piece of work.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

When thinking of ideas for out thriller we considered other thrillers. However in the extract that we made we do not see the PROTAGONIST. As this is only the opening of our thriller you will see the ANTAGONIST later on in the film.

Also when looking at our film we feel that the thriller 'The Ring' and our thriller 'Ring of Roses' show some similarities:

We also understand the genre of thriller and have included the content of a perfect thriller such as dark lighting, cliff hangers and suspense to make the audience want to keep watching.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our group feels that our film is mainly aimed at young adults as it shows that the film is strongly about child bullying. It shows that the teenager would mainly attack someone in the park so therefore it is representing teenagers in both ways of bad and good but it is basically showing what life is really like for teenagers in Dagenham because there are teenagers all the time attacking others and therefore this media product shows a strong view on bullying.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The kind of media institution that might distribute our media product would be one that likes the idea of social realism. Also this film could be a way of teaching young adults about the ways of bullying and the consequences for this.

Our film could be distributed for viewing by a real production or distribution company. This could either be in the UK such as 'FilmFour' or 'Metrodome' or it could be distributed in the USA such as '20th Century Fox' or 'universal'.

It could also be viewed in many different ways via the internet which is a massive way of getting anything that is produced to be seen. Youtube is a major public website that mostly everyone has been on.

There are other internet websites that advertise films and distribute them:

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience of our media product would pretty much be anyone who likes a basic idea of a thriller, where there is a basic story line behind and the effects of the camera and effects put on buy the editing software imovie. Also it becomes more sinister and mysterious as the film goes on. However the majority of the cast and the victims of the killer would mainly be teenagers so the film could appeal more to teenagers and also there is a message behind the thriller about bullying which would get across to the teenagers.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

The way that we attracted our audience was by showing in the extract mainly teenagers because the film would mainly be for teenagers because most of the cast would of been teenagers and also it would show teenage life in dagenham and therefore teenagers would of been able to relate to this.

Also with the actual thriller and the editing also kept the audience attracted. For example the jump cuts at the beginning and the sounds behind it makes the audience want to keep watching to see what it will lead to.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt a lot about technologies from constructing this product, for example i have learnt how to operate a camera and i know what every button is for etc and how to record and also how to use a tripod in different ways to get the best camera shot, i also learnt how to use the imacs and edit movies and input sounds into the movie and also how to put in different effects such as dissolves and dark lighting.

We also use different camera techniques and shots in our thriller, we use shot/reverse shot which is when we see a person looking at someone who is off the screen, and then the camera switches to the other person looking back at the first person, which lets people know that they are looking at each other.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the product?

Looking back on the preliminary task which our group made, i can see that we have learnt a lot just from filming over the weeks, we have learnt a lot more techniques and camera shots and we have also learned a lot more on how to operate the camera. We also learned how to edit much easier and how to put in music into movies using the mac computer. Also in our preliminary we ignored the 180 degree rule which now looking at our thriller we have taken it into account. Also comparing the thriller to the preliminary exercise you can see that we had a greater understanding of the editing and filming equipment.

'Ring of Roses'

'Preliminary'

Overall i enjoyed creating a thriller and i am looking forward to more exercises which involve filming and acting.

Final Thriller - RING OF ROSES

Editing !!

When editing our thrillers we used the IMACS and we used a program called IMOVIE.

iMovie is a proprietary video editing software application which allows Mac users to edit their own home movies. iMovie imports video footage to the Mac using either the FireWire interface on most MiniDV format digital video cameras, the USB port, or by importing the files from a hard drive. From there, the user can edit the video clips, add titles, and add music. Effects include basic color correction and video enhancement tools, and transitions such as fade-in, fade-out, and slides.

3rd Time LUCKY ...

As our thriller was deleted we have had a re-think about our idea. The idea that we came up with was at the beginning we still have the shot of the door but it jumps forward bit by bit and the jumps right back to the beginning and jumps forward but with different angles.

Then we still use the old idea of going into the room when its dark and the going into my eye. Then coming out one of the lower school pupils eyes, then we are still using the piece when they play around but i think that we should change the death as it does not make sense.

Then we changed the end this also has the same effect as the beginning as it jumps forward but this time im moving forward, then the shot goes completely black and then there is a close up of my eyes.

O !

Our coursework has been deleted, we looked back through the tape in our camera but found out that we recorded over some of the clips that we needed for our thriller. We now need to re-film the middle part of our coursework again as we have been given longer for our film to be in.

Health & Safety :)

1- There should be no filming in inappropriate locations.
2- Should check safety of locations e.g. roads.
3- Minimise risk of theft if equipment (know where it is, keep it with you at all times).
4- When filming on location ensure that your teacher or a responsible adult knows where you are and had a telephone number if they need you to return.
5- You should all equipment is working before you go (when the equipment is returned and it is broken then you will be responsible for the damage even if it was like this state before you signed the equipment out)
6- Should ensure you have permission for filming if necessary.
7- You should also film with on other person.
8- You should ensure that you have permission from those that you are filming.

Idea Change !!!

To make our thriller better we came up with a new idea to add to the old idea we had. We will still walk down the corridor and through the door but when the door is pushed open we are going to see me crouching down on the floor. There's also going to be a piece of paper on the floor and you can see that my wrist has been cut. Then you can see on the piece of paper that i have been writing "IT WAS AN ACCIDENT" over and over again but its written in my blood. Then i will look up to the camera, using the old idea the camera will zoom into my eye and then zoom out from the lower school students. this will look like i'm having a flashback of what happened, it will play them playing around and then the death, after this they run towards the camera and split. then it will fade out and fade back to me, the camera will then run backwards and out down the corridor with me chasing it. Finally the door will shut and will leave me up against the door and will leave the hand print in blood on the door.

Second Day FILMING :)

We were now onto another part of the film. This part was the hardest as again we had different views on how to film this section. Also when we started filming we figured out that it was too dark to film, but we feel that this location is perfect for the atmosphere we need to create. The idea that we came out with to solve this problem is we could have a torch hanging from the ceiling so this would create a small light but would keep the darkness that we want.

First Day FILMING :)

We was out filming with the cameras for the first time. Our location was the lower school and it starred 3 pupils from the lower, but first we had to get permission from their parents. After this we started filming, we struggled for the first 10 minutes about an idea how to film it. Then our ideas came together and we are happy with the progress that we are making.

Camera's = :S

Today we were shown how to use the cameras and also how to keep them in safe condition.

We were given a short script which we had to follow including 12 different shots. When we found a place to film we started filming but went away from the script. We filmed them and then uploaded them onto the imac. When we done this we tried to edit them together and then realised that we had to follow the script. We then filmed again............... WENT WRONGG :( when we were importing them to the computer we were not doing it as individual shots we uploaded the whole thing. So we filmed for a last time and we finally got it right, we uploaded them onto the imac and edited them together.

180° Rule :D

The 180° rule is a basic guideline in film making that states that two characters (or other elements) in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line. The new shot, from the opposite side, is known as a reverse angle.

Target Audience :)

To help us with the target audience we arranged a Questionnaire.
When done this as it would tell us what type of thrillers people like so we can put that into out film.

Questionnaire :)

1- Are you male/female?

2- Do you like thrillers?

3- What genre of thriller do you like?

4- Would you think a good ending for a thriller would be a CLIFFHANGER?

5- Do you think that thrillers should be for all ages?

6- What things do you not like to watch in a thriller?

This questionnaire will help us achieve the best for our film.

Thriller Ideas :)

Group = Casey Barnard, Megan Billany and Dannielle Bascombe

We had many ideas for the thriller film. We came up with such names as ...

-Four Walls
-The Asylum
-Patience
-The Well

When thinking up the ideas we were thinking of names first. This made the decision difficult as we then had to think of an idea for the title. So we first thought of a accessable set.

An idea that we all agreed on was "A Ring Of Roses".
