My task is to plan, film and evaluate a new fiction film in the thriller gerne to last a maximum two minutes.
Aspects of the Thriller
Suspense - Example, Camera reveals that theres a bomb under the table to the audience but the characters are unaware of it.
Shock - Example, Camera does not reveal bomb, goes of without warning, explodes and KILLS ALL.
Hitchcock's Maguffin
A Maguffin is a plot device that motivates the characters and advances the story but has little other relevance to the story.
- Necklace in crook stories
- Papers in spy stories.
The Physcological Thriller
- Comes from two or more characters preying upon one another's minds, playing deceptive games with the other or merely trying to demolish the other's mental state.
- Suspense comes from one solitary character where characters must resolve conflicts with their own minds.
- Conflict is an effort to understand something that has happened to them.
Narrative - Structure, formulas and devices
- The clear establishment of 'cause and effect' which establishes character motivations and helps tell an interesting story which proceeds logically and steadily.
- Automatic use of 'Continuity Editing'.
Enigmas
- Something mysterious or unexplicable, riddle or difficult problem.
-Commonly something that the protagonist has to find out or solve before the narrative is resolved and the film finishes.
Red Herrings
- A device which intends to divert the audience.
-Can work with other devices (Enigmas) to create suspense.
- - Example -> 'North By Northwest' (Hitchcock- 1958) - Main character, Thornhill, sent to meet a man who explains why he has been mistaken for a government agent and we believe, helps him.
Cliffhangers
-Sometimes, not always used.
-Main character in a difficult dilema , or confronted with a shocking relevation.
-Can entice the audience to keep watching in order to see how the situation resolves itself.
